Can Amikacin harm my foetus?

Q: I was down with fever last week. I consulted a gynaecologist, as I am pregnant, and she gave me Monocef tablets and three Amikacin injections for three days. After taking Amikacin injections my fever came down. Then I went to a government hospital where I was told that Amikacin is injurious to my baby and should not be given during pregnancy. Could you please tell me how much harm will it cause to my baby?

A:Amikacin is known to be toxic to the nerves of the ear. The drug may have had an impact on the developing system. The effects occur rarely and defects of this type cannot be detected by ultrasound or any other test.
