Can a newborn be given calcium drops?

Q: My sister had gestational diabetes. Her baby boy was born with a birth weight of 2.25 kgs. He experienced some jitteriness for the first 2 days and something like fits. Now he is 9 days old; should he be given calcium drops and in what amount? When will he gain weight? Should any extra care be given to him?

A:If the baby is taking adequate amount of feeds, is without any jitteriness and has normal blood level of calcium, there is no need to supplement extra calcium. Babies after birth may loose weight for the first 4-5 days and then start gaining. Most of them would regain birth weight by 10-14 days and beyond which they start gaining weight.
