Can a mediclaim policy be transferred?

Q: I have a mediclaim policy of New India Assurance Corporation, worth Rs. 3 lacs. Can the same be transferred at the time of renewal or do I have to take a new one? I am a resident of India. In near future I may get the US green card. Will I then be entitled to receive the benefit of the policy in India/USA?

A:I am assuming here that you have an individual mediclaim policy and not group policy coverage from your employer. The policy can be transferred to any other Public Sector insurance company viz National Insurance, Oriental insurance or United India Insurance. Your benefits will continue to remain the same and any cumulative bonus that you may earned will also be transferred to the new insurer. This transfer of benefits may not be possible in case you shift to private sector insurance companies. In case you receive a green card, any claim on this policy will only be applicable for treatment in India only.
