Can a child get a blood clot in the brain & a crack in the skull during pregnancy?
Q: Can a baby have a blood clot in the brain and crack in the skull during pregnancy? My child is 8 months old and weighed 2.3 kg at birth. He weighs 4.5 kg now and had fit. He has delayed development and suddenly becomes semi conscious. CT scan showed a blood clot in the brain and a crack in the left side of the skull. Please advise.
A:A baby can occasionally develop bleeding/clot in the brain during pregnancy, if the baby has a bleeding disorder e.g. thrombocytopenia or if suffers from certain infections and some other rare situations. Fracture or crack in the skull is usually not seen, unless the baby has a disorder where the bones are very fragile. After birth, trauma/fall can result in fracture in the skull and clots in the brain.
