Are Osteo Sprays, for osteoporosis, safe?

Q: Is Osteo spray, an inhalant available in the market? This is prescribed by my doctor for osteoporosis. Is it safe?

A:There are two types of Osteo Sprays: calcitonin-salmon nasal spray (sold under the trade name of Miacalcin in the United States) and Osteo Relief Spray (for topical use). The latter is a herbal product. Since it has not undergone the usual scientific, controlled clinical trials, we are unable to comment on its safety and efficacy. Miacalcin is meant for women who either do not tolerate or are not suitable for hormonal replacement therapy containing estrogens. Such patients should be at least 5 years beyond menopause. The product slows the rate of bone loss.
