Stress doesn't affect fertility

Stress doesnt affect fertility

Stress and tension do not reduce the success of a woman's fertility treatment. Women undergoing IVF or other assisted reproduction therapy can be reassured that emotional distress caused by their infertility or other life events will not prevent the treatment from working.

Infertility affects up to 15% of the childbearing population and over half of these individuals will seek medical advice in the hope of becoming a parent. Many women believe that emotional distress can reduce their chances of becoming pregnant naturally or having success with fertility treatments. This view is largely based on anecdotal evidence and fertility myths such as 'don't think about it and you'll get pregnant'. Doctors are skeptical that stress affects fertility due to the lack of evidence on this issue.

To examine whether pretreatment emotional distress in women is associated with achievement of pregnancy after a cycle of assisted reproductive technology, British researchers analysed data from 14 studies that included a total of 3,583 women who had undergone fertility treatment and had been assessed for anxiety and stress before they began their therapy.
The comparison of women who became pregnant and those who did not found no association between emotional distress and the likelihood of becoming pregnant.

These findings should reassure women that emotional distress caused by fertility problems or other life events co-occurring with treatment will not compromise their chance of becoming pregnant.
