Will I if gain weight if I discontinue exercising?

Q: I go to the gym daily and mostly concentrate on cardio activities. I have heard that if you do weights you tend to gain weight when you leave it for sometime. Is it true?

A:As with any activity, there will be changes in the body. But you have to ask yourself, what are the SUSTAINABLE activities you can take up and for what purpose you are doing so. If it is for a short time that you want to do weights, then it may not be such a good idea to start too heavily on them, anyway. You may not put on weight when you leave weights, but the muscles that you have toned, will lose their tone over time. Ideally you should have a balance in your fitness program to cover all aspects of the fitness triangle: cardio vascular endurance, muscular strength and endurance as well as flexibility. With cardio training, what tends to happen is that the upper body does not get as toned as the lower body unless you are using the rowing machine. So do find a balance for yourself in terms of what you should include.
