Why is my sister getting a backache?

Q: My 38 years old sister has been suffering from severe backache. She got an x-ray done for the same, but the reports didn't indicate anything. She suffers from immense pain, when she lies down straight and faces difficulty in getting up. She finds it difficult to change her sleeping position when she goes to bed at night. She is a health freak and exercises regularly. I fear that some nerve in the back must be getting pressed, due to which she gets the pain, which gradually moves down to her hip. What should be the further course of action?

A:She might be having a pinched nerve in her back, or it may be a muscular pain. The first thing is to try anti-inflammatory medicines like ibuprofen or diclofenac. If the pain is not relieved after a regular dose for a week then she needs to be evaluated by an orthopaedic surgeon. Possibly get an MRI to see the soft tissues. Majority of the cases resolve with conservative treatment, which includes anti-inflammatory medication, physical therapy, rest, activity modification and occasional epidural injections.
