Why is my knee still painful inspite of being replaced?

Q: I have gone for tottal knee replacement (TKR) of both my knees. Now the joint which was replaced is quite painful. It was never ok from the time of recovery. Now the surgeons are advising for a revised knee surgery. What could be reason for such rapid deterioration and difference in quality/result of operation on same patient by the same doctor?

A:It is not uncommon to have different results on two knees on the same patient, as the two operations are different, and the knees are also never same. Pain after a few years is usually due to loosening of the implants, the cause of which can be easily detected on seeing the series of x-rays. But, I am sure the usual recourse is another surgery to set it right.
