Q: My 25 years old wife has very thin nails. Her nails are really sensitive and because of this, she cannot perform some day to day activities. After certain time, the nails come out with a thin peel. She feels pain after cutting the nail with nail cutter/blade. Is it some disorder?

A:Actual thinning of the nails is very rare. What is common is increased fragility of the nails. Such nails split at the free end and then break off. Maybe this is what is happening with your wife. A clinical examination should be able to establish the disorder. Nails can become fragile in a number of conditions. These include some internal disorders (peripheral neuropathies, nutritional deficiencies, etc.), damage by chemicals like water and detergents, trauma from manicure etc.
