Why do some babies feel pain while passing gas or stools?

Q: My baby is 1 month old. She seems to be in pain while passing gas or stool. While passing, she gives a pressurising sound and then cries out. She is also developing lot of gas. Are these normal or should we go to a doctor?

A:It is normal in some babies, that they make more gas and may feel little discomfort while passing this. Even exclusively breast fed babies may do this. Just help the baby to pass gas by keeping him on her tummy for some time, but it must be noted that such small babies should not be left on their tummy unattended. As she grows this will settle down.
