Why do I feel burning sensation while urinating?

Q: I am a 36 years old male with a urinal problem. My urine culture reports esch. coli 100000 org/ml. I have been taking Amikacin injections using cannula for the last ten days every morning and evening, on doctor’s prescription. But, I still face burning sensation while urinating. I also feel very weak. How can my problem be cured?

A:You have had a urinary tract infection, which is quite unusual in young men. You need to be evaluated by a urologist for an underlying problem which may be a stone, a stricture (narrowing in the urinary passage) or prostatitis (infection of the prostate glands). An ultrasound, uroflowmetry and possibly a retrograde urethrogram are some of the tests which may provide an answer and a subsequent pathway to effective treatment.
