What to do with my sister who is obsessed about her weight?
Q: My sister she is 23 years old and her weight is 51kg and height is 5.2. Her problem is that she is really obsessed about her weight. She has a habit of checking her weight almost everyday, whenever she eats heavy foods her weight becomes 52kgs. She gets very worried the whole day and then the next day she will eat only about 300 - 400 calories until her weight is 51 or 50.8. Why is this happening? Why does her weight fluctuate like this? She does not have any health problem. She got married 7 months ago and is trying to conceive too. Can you please suggest something?
A:It is not good to be so obsessed with one’s weight. Minor weight fluctuations occur daily due to loss of fluid and diet. It is important to eat a balanced diet and include variety of foods from different food groups. Fruits and vegetables can give enough sugar, vitamins and minerals but are a poor source of proteins. She should eat a balanced diet with cereal and grains, fruits, vegetables, milk, small amount of fat and meat (if she is a non-vegetarian). Eating in moderation but balanced will help you in long term. It is not essential to include all the three proteins, carbohydrates and fats in the same proportion in all the five meals. She can have meals at a gap of 3 hours. An inclusion of all should be ensured in her breakfast and lunch whereas the mid-meal snacks and dinner may be just proteins or carbohydrates. Make sure she does not use any saturated fats like ghee, butter and cheese for the preparation of meals. Eat small meals slowly. Go for a brisk walk for half an hour everyday. Being active will only make her feel energetic the whole day. She should drink at least 10 glasses of pure water everyday and should treat herself to her favourite foods only once in fifteen days. If this behaviour persists, she should consult a psychiatrist.
