What kind of treatment should be given to my daughter?

Q: I have a seven years old daughter. She started to go for swimming after which she developed fever. She was given Zithromax after which her urine routine microscopy showed 25 leukocytes/ml. This was repeated after 2 weeks and it showed 500 leukocytes/ml. Her haemoglobin is 9.9 g%. The urine culture indicated mixed bacterial growth. This was also repeated twice, but the results were the same. Please suggest.

A:Your daughter probably has a urinary tract infection. At this age she is prone to get this. Ill maintained swimming pools could be a possible source of infection in females. It is not necessary to wait for symptoms to appear before we treat her. If a well done culture report shows a significant infection, we need to intervene and take care of her. In addition to treating infection we need to ensure that she should not have frequent recurrence. It would be worth consulting a urologist and follow up with periodic urine cultures.
