What is the reason for redness and flaking of skin?

Q: My daughter is 6 years old. The skin around her left eye has become very red and shows flaking. She has the same symptom under her nose and mouth as well. When the skin is moisturised properly, it looks better otherwise it is very dry. The doctor gave some steroid ointment first but it didn't work. He then gave her some anti-fungal cream, which is not working either. Can you please suggest any remedy?

A:She could be suffering from seborrhoeic dermatitis or atopic dermatitis. You can try the following:

A good anti-dandruff shampoo daily/alternate days for scalp wash

A mild skin cleanser (e.g. Cetaphil etc.)

Mild corticosteroid creams (e.g. Fluticasone, mometasone, 1% hydrocortisone, desonide etc.)

Tacrolimus ointment

Anti-histamine (e.g. Allegra kidtab/Sizon kidtab)

A good moisturizer like: Oilatum, Emolene, Cetaphil, Emoderm creams. You could also suggest the above 2 diagnoses to your treating physician.
