What is the cause of localised hair loss?

Q: I am 30 years old. For nearly 2 months now, there is a circular region on the right side of the face from where the facial hair [beard] wont grow. Please tell me the cause and the remedy.

A:Most probably you have alopecia areata which may come and go even without treatment. Local steroids and or minoxidil lotion are usually helpful. Fungal infection and traction alopecia (in those with long hair) are some other possibilities. Once a diagnosis is made, treatment should help you.
