What is Guinea fever?

Q: My parents are affected with Guinea fever. Could you please let me know the medication that needs to be taken for this? They also have been vomiting for the past 2 days.

A:Guinea fever is a mosquito borne viral infection. The diagnosis of Guinea fever is a clinical one (with high index of suspicion particularly if there is some ongoing outbreak) but the confirmation is by specialised virological tests. There is no specific treatment for Guinea fever since it is a viral infection. Management of the disease is entirely symptomatic and supportive. Hence, fluid management, analgesics and anticonvulsants may be used if medically considered appropriate.
