What is an internal ultrasound?

Q: What is an internal ultrasound? How is it done and how long does it usually take?

A:An internal ultrasound scan is a scan done by using a probe that can be introduced into a body space, such as a transvaginal scan for the uterus and ovaries, a transrectal scan for the prostate and an endoscope mounted probe for the heart and pancreas. For a transvaginal or transrectal scan the probe is wiped and dried and then covered with a condom. Extra gel is then placed on the tip and the probe introduced. The study takes 02-20 minutes and is safe and usually painless.
