What is acid peptic disease (APD)?

Q: What is acid peptic disease? Recently, my doctor told me that I am suffering from APD. I have severe stomach pain after taking food. Please advise.

A:Acid peptic disease refers to the development of symptoms secondary to acid in the stomach. Some patients develop an ulcer which is called peptic ulcer. Others develop dyspepsia without the occurrence of an ulcer, a condition termed non ulcer dyspepsia. Acid-related symptoms are generally well controlled by drugs such as H2-receptor antagonists and proton pump inhibitors, which reduce acid production.
