What could be the cause for fever and blood in the urine?

Q: My friend is 18 years old and he is suffering from fever and also has blood in the urine. What is the reason behind this?

A:Fever with blood in the urine can be due to kidney related causes like a urinary tract infection. It can also be related to other causes of fever with bleeding tendency including dengue, malaria etc. Need to do cultures for blood and urine, malaria and dengue serology, platelet count, PT/ INR. There are other rare disorders with bleeding tendency but are less likely in view of an acute illness. If ultrasonography (USG) is normal, computerized tomography (CT) of kidney urinary bladder (KUB) maybe done.
