Should I continue with the prescribed medicines?

Q: I am a 24 years old female. I weigh 58 kg and my height is 158 cm. My thyroid test report shows: T3-1.28, T4-11.06 and TSH-6.64. I was prescribed half a tablet of Eltroxin 100mg everyday with empty stomach for one month. I want to know for how many months do I need to use this tablet? Can I conceive with hypothyroidism? Am I getting irregular periods because of this? What are the precautions to be taken before conceiving? Also tell me the diet for thyroid patients? Is this hereditary?

A:You have subclinical hypothyroidism. Usually with a TSH level of under 10 we usually do not treat unless there is goitre, high cholesterol levels, obesity, irregular cycles, infertility or strongly positive anti-TPO antibodies in blood. Just go through your records and ask your doctor again if you really need medications. My suggestion is to check the abovementioned things. If all is negative, then observe and retest TSH after 3 months.
