Right proportion of foods

Q: Please suggest us as to what should be the right proportion of food intake for an adult as well as a child for a day - like how much percentage should be Carbohydrates, Proteins, Fats, Minerals and Vitamins. We do not know the ratio of these different nutrients in our daily food though we know the nutrient content of several food items individually.

A:In a balanced diet,

  • 60% of the total calories should be provided by carbohydrates (cereals, starches, pulses and fruits)
  • 15-20% of calories from proteins (dairy, meat, egg and pulses)
  • 20-25% from fats and oils (visible & invisible).
A person consuming 2000 KCal per day, requires 300 gm of carbohydrate, 75 gm protein and 55 gm of fat (visible and invisible). Visible fat should be about 20 gm/day.
