Is it vital to get my baby vaccinated with IPV, Prevnar and Rotarix?

Q: I have a four-month-old daughter who was born premature in eighth month. The doctors have given necessary her vaccine but also told that there are certain new vaccines that would be beneficial for the baby. The names of vaccine are IPV, Prevnar and Rotarix. Are these vaccinations vital for the baby’s health?

A:All of these are fairly expensive vaccines (for example, a full course of Prevnar costs Rs. 16,000/-). These vaccines are effective and safe and give protection against specific organisms. These infections can sometimes occur in children and the probability is higher in preterms especially if they are not growing well. It is just like getting insurance on a car; with increasing cost the insurance elements get increasing. Thus, it is in a way is linked to the extent that one is willing to insure against. If you can easily afford the cost, go ahead and give them. If not, do not lose any sleep over it.
