Is high haemoglobin value abnormal?

Q: I am 38 years old and have high haemoglobin of 18.4. Is there any problem in having high haemoglobin? What precautions can I take to reduce or maintain the same level? I do not take alcohol or smoke. Since an early age I have been eating a high protein diet.

A:The upper limit of Hb for adult males is 18.0g/dl. You have not mentioned your red cell counts and the packed cell volume (PCV). In case there is no symptom, this is your normal Hb value. In case there are symptoms, one will have to investigate for erythrocytosis. But please remember, no one treats an abnormal test result, the patient is treated.
