Is consuming water with an increased pH level harmful?

Q: The water supplied through our society has a high pH level. What are the adverse effects if we use such water for all purposes like drinking, washing and bathing? I would also like to know if there is any process for treating such water at domestic level or at the supply end? Please enlighten me about this.

A:Water that has an increased pH or is more alkaline than normal could be softer and therefore may be better for washing in or with. There is unlikely to be any health hazard since many people habitually prefer to drink soda water that is alkaline and they feel better for so doing! One could add a small amount of acetic acid (vinegar) or even hydrochloric acid (which the normal stomach adds in any case) to correct the pH, but this is not really necessary.
