How to take care of underweight twins?

Q: We have twin girl children, 13 months old. They were 2.25 and 2.30 kgs respectively at the time of birth. Now, when they are over 13 months, they weigh only 6 and 7 kg. One walks quite fine but the other one has just started walking. She has painful bowel movements. What should we do? They are not taking mothers milk now?

A:Twin babies are difficult to look after, more so if they are small at birth. Both have obviously remained small for age. Six and seven kilos weight is less than what they should be. Try and increase the caloric intake by adding oil or ghee to their food. If they are constipated and having pain while passing stool increase their fibre intake and make sure they drink enough water. Walking at 13 months is good.
