How to prevent a child from drinking in a lying-down position?

Q: My 30-month old grandson will only drink his juice or milk in a lying-down position. This is the way he learned to drink from his bottle and now he continues to drink everything this way. My daughter has tried various ways to get him to sit up to drink, but he will simply throw a tantrum and sometimes even ends up throwing up the juice/milk.

A:The only way to stop him from lying down and drinking is to stop giving him fluids in a bottle. It does not matter if he stops drinking milk and juice for a few days. At the age of 2 1/2 years he has no need to drink from a bottle he should be drinking from a glass. If there is no bottle he cannot drink from a bottle and he will learn to sit and drink fluids.
