How to deal with constipation in a child with imperforate anus?
Q: My 8 months old daughter was born with an imperforate anus and she is having trouble using the bathroom. At this time she doesn't need to have surgery. She is breast fed and barely drinks from a sippy cup. She also eats a mixture of baby food and adult food. I would like to know what foods are best to help her with constipation?
A:You do not need to take any special precautions. She can have almost whatever any other child of 8 months can have. You will gradually learn if a particular food item does not suit her; avoid it. Gradually introduce cereals and mashed vegetables in dal (lentils). Increase the sugar intake and/or honey. This helps ease constipation.
