How can acidity be treated?
Q: I am a 55 years old man, weigh 97 kg and am 173 cm tall. For the last one month, I have severe acidity problem due to which I am unable to sleep at night. I experience chest pain and irritation in the food pipe. I used to go for night walk daily for an hour or so but due to uneasiness and tiredness after work, I have left it. I have consulted a doctor who has prescribed these medicines - Parit, Rantac, Beplex forte and Unienzyme. Am I on the right medication? Is there any permanent cure to acidity?
A:It sounds like you have a condition called GERD (gastro-oesophageal reflux disease), which means that acid from your stomach is backing up into your food pipe (oesophagus). Please take the following steps:
- Take Omeprazole 20 mg in morning before breakfast on an empty stomach.
- Lose weight as you are overweight
- Avoid heavy meals
- Avoid going to bed for at least 2 hours after a meal.
- You can stop all the other medications.
