For how long can my daughter take fluticasone for allergic rhinitis?
Q: My youngest daughter is turning 4 in January next year. She has been diagnosed with allergic rhinitis. What is a safe time span for which she can be put on flixotide (Fluticasone propionate) prophylaxis? Last year she was on it for one month, but it recurred this year. Can we use this drug for a longer period of time? Please suggest a the time frame and will there be any side effects?
A:Fluticasone is a preventer inhaler which can be used for weeks to 3-6 months. If the problem is only seasonal then you can identify that period of time and start spray early. The dose of these steroid is very small and usually does not cause significant side effects, but use under medical supervision for as long as it is required.
