Does the administration of anaesthesia affect the fetus?

Q: My friend is going to have a disc surgery in a week time but she is also been pregnant 5 weeks. She would like to know if any kind of anaesthesia can be dangerous for her baby?

A:Disk surgery with 5 weeks pregnancy, is very high risk for the fetus for developing congenital malformation. The chances of abortion are also high. If the disk problem is not very urgent, she can continue the pregnancy till the fetus is viable i.e. after 30 - 32 weeks. If the disk problem is acute, she can undergo medical termination of pregnancy first and then proceed with the disk surgery.
