Do small kidneys interfere with conception?

Q: I was diagnosed with congenital small kidneys. Is it possible for me to conceive and have babies? I have been sexually active for more than a year but still not succeeded to bear a child. Is it because of my kidney condition?

A:Stage of underlying kidney disease does affect a successful pregnancy course, with advanced stages often resulting in an increased incidence of maternal and fetal morbidity. An advanced stage of kidney failure (i.e. someone who is on dialysis) is known to reduce the chances of conception with an overall poor pregnancy outcome. However, without the information regarding your underlying kidney function (i.e. serum creatinine value), it is not possible to comment on any impact your congenitally small kidneys may have on your chances of conception and successful pregnancy outcome.
