Do I need to take Thyronorm during pregnancy?

Q: I am a 27 years old pregnant woman suffering from hypothyroidism for the last three years. The recent report indicates that my TSH level is well under control but my doctor has asked me to take Thyronorm 25 mcg till my delivery. However, some doctors say that there is no need of taking this medicine if TSH is under control.

A:From pregnancy point of view, the dose of Thyronorm has to be increased almost every month, as the demand for thyroxin increases as the size of the growing child increases. One should get FT4 checked frequently - may be monthly. If you are pregnant, you should immediately increase the dose to 50 mcug a day and repeat FT4 after two weeks and maintain it around 1.2 - 1.3 ng/dl.
