Do I have hypothyroidism?

Q: I am a 24 years old female diagnosed with hypothyroidism three months back. TSH was normal, only T3 and T4 varied. So doctor prescribed thyronorm (25 mcg). Now again I underwent blood test which came normal with T3, T4 and TSH levels. I am still having the problem of hair loss though the results are normal now. How can hair loss be managed?

A:There is serious doubt about the diagnosis of hypothyroidism as in majority of hypothyroid patients TSH is first to rise unless the defect is at the level of pituitary gland. I would suggest you to stop thyroxine for 6 weeks and get TSH, free T4 along with anti-TPO from a relaible (accredited lab). If abnormal then we will take a decision about the treatment. Your hair loss may not be due to thyroid dysfunction so please consult a skin specialist.
