Can my daughter be operated for VSD?

Q: My daughter is 4 months old and has a hole in heart (Ventricular Septal Defect). The size is 6 mm. Can it be operated at this age?

A:Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD) can be operated at any age depending on the urgency. In the majority of cases, if the VSD is large, as in this case, we would like to wait till 6 months of age and advise operation if the VSD has not reduced in size by this time. However, one should ensure that during this waiting period the child is not in congestive heart failure and is gaining weight appropriately.
