Can I have a normal pregnancy after back surgery?

Q: I am a 25 years old girl and weigh 65 kg. I underwent microdiscecotomy for L1 S5 lumbar back problem 3 years back. Till date I don't have any problem associated with my back. I am getting married in 7 months and have certain queries. I need to lose weight. Can I start cycling on a stationary cycle? Will the operation have any problem in my pregnancy or conceiving? Is yoga safe for me? What precautions do I need to take?

A:The surgery will not interfere with your conception or pregnancy. You can do treadmill, which is best for you. I would not recommend cycling since it puts load on your back. Yoga is fine as long as you selectively avoid those asanas that promote forward bending. Extension exercises (bending backwards) are the best for you. As far as precautions are concerned - avoid ground level activities and keep changing positions every 20-30 minutes.
