Can a 4-month-old sit and stand with support?

Q: My son is 4 months old and some of my family members try to make him sit and stand by just holding his arms. For the past few days he has started pushing himself up to standing position when sitting with his arms held up. Some people tell me its very harmful for his legs and spine as his neck still sways a little while others say it is going to help his muscles. Please suggest.

A:This is normal. If he is trying to bear weight on his legs this is fine and you should allow him. However, if his head wobbles, support his neck and head. Just relax, there is nothing wrong with your baby.
