Are bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) and varicocele correction related to infertility?

Q: I am a 38 years old male and have undergone surgical treatment for BOO and varicocele correction. Is it related to infertility?

A:Varicocele correction may have been recommended for low sperm count or motility on semen examination, as 70% of such treated patients may have significant rebound of the good sperm count. Treatment of BOO is usually done with bladder neck incision or transurethral resection of the prostate, both of which may cause retrograde ejaculation. Retrograde ejaculation means that semen goes back and gets mixed with bladder urine at the time of ejaculation, instead of coming out.
