Am I developing arthritis?

Q: I am 36 years old. I have recently joined a gym and after one month my knees started paining. If I stand up suddenly or sit down then I have pain in both knees. I have little swelling on the back side of the knee of right leg. I went to a doctor who told me that I have arthritis but I still have doubts. Please tell me what is this disease and what problem I have?

A:Arthritis is basically wear and tear of the joint. So it is possible with the symptoms you have mentioned. The swelling at the back of your knee is hamstring spasm (tightness) you have developed which is giving you the extra pain and you are unable to extend your knee when you get up from the sitting position. Basically, I suggest you should take some pain killers and rest at the moment. You should visit a physiotherapy clinic and take 8-10 sessions of short wave diathermy and learn proper exercises and precautions for your knee. Please stop going to the gym till your knee is in proper condition.
