Stress can be defined as a person's feelings when they have to handle more than they are normally used to. When we are under stress, our body responds as if we are in danger. This leads to the secretion of hormones that speed up our heart beat and we tend to breathe faster.

The adverse effects of stress on our body include headaches, back pain, upset stomach, and difficulty in sleeping.

Women are more susceptible to stress than their male counterparts. Both men and women react differently to stressful situations. Studies have shown that women are more likely to exhibit physical symptoms related to stress. Here's how you can educate yourself on the symptoms of stress and see if your mother is exhibiting any of the following:

  • Some women lose their appetite whereas others develop cravings for junk food or chocolates when under stress.
  • Low energy with frequent headaches
  • Upset stomach, including diarrhoea, constipation and nausea
  • Aches, pains, and tense muscles
  • Chest pain and rapid heartbeat
  • Insomnia
  • Frequent colds and infections
  • High stress levels lead to the secretion of the hormone prolactin which can lead to thinning of hair with hair loss.

This is how you can help your mother remain stress free this Mother's Day 2017. Help her make a little time and try a few of these tips to reduce stress and achieve emotional balance:
  1. She should exercise regularly as it reduces stress, improves mood, and boosts overall health. It will also help her sleep better.
  2. Build a support system. Help her become a part of a religious community or join some group or club where she can foster solid friendships to help her feel secure and connected.
  3. Keep a positive attitude - always helps to make a gratitude list.
  4. Help her let go of negatives. Accept that there are things you cannot control.
  5. Help her become more assertive instead of aggressive.
  6. Think of ways to help her find ways to relax like meditation. Buy her some relaxation tapes and CDs. She can also listen to the great music of classical composers.
  7. Develop new interests. Having a sense of adventure can help her reduce stress. Help her re-kindle her hobbies.
  8. Get her to get enough rest and sleep. When under stress, the body needs time to recover. Give it the rest it needs.
