Why can't I pronounce 'R' correctly?

Q: I am 26 years old. I have a speech problem; I cannot pronounce the letter 'R' correctly. What should I do?

A:The 'R' sound is made by a restricted elevation of a tightened tongue. Sometimes, the reason for the mispronunciation is a tongue-tie, which might need surgical removal - a minor 15 minute OPD procedure. Thereafter, speech therapy should follow. It can take up to one month for a good 'R' to flow freely during conversation.
