What is wrong with my fetus's stomach?

Q: I am 29 weeks pregnant and in my sonogram yesterday the doctor noticed an abnormality in the baby's stomach. It is shaped like a kidney bean and has a cloudy substance in it. I have been referred to a specialist but the waiting is getting to me. Have you heard or seen this before? What could be the occurrence of this?

A:Fluid collections of this type can be due to numerous causes of maldevelopment of the digestive or urinary system of the baby. Fortunately, most of these are either treatable or resolve on their own and do not cause any major compromise of the quality of life.
