Weight gain after delivery

Q: I read your article about obesity in the lifestyle coloumn. Main reason for obesity is more intake of fats and food. This is the primary reason but I would like to draw your attention to another point that lots of women get fat/swell after delivery. Would you like to elaborate on this point and also how can we stop or reduce the problem?

A:Women gain weight during pregnancy, a small percentage of which is lost post- delivery and some during lactation. However, with proper care of diet avoiding excessively oily and sugary food, along with exercise, there is no justification that a woman should not return back into shape within a couple of months. Usually what happens is that the diet remain rich in calories, fats and sugars which leads to inability to lose weight post-delivery and continued fatness.
