Redness of the skin around lips

Q: I am a 28 year old female and have developed redness of the skin around my lips. It itches and burns. Recently I have noticed that some fluid oozes out from the red area and forms a crust when dry. I have tried using cold sore medicine applications. The situation heals in about a week, but aggravates every time I go outdoors. I would like to know if this is a cold sore or an allergic reaction?

A:Dermatitis occurring over the lips and spreading could be due to lip licking (common in children), due to lip stick use in females, or due to tooth pastes etc. History taking and examination is important to arrive at the exact diagnosis. You can get relief by applying steroid plus antibiotic cream like Flutibact or Fucibet. Do consult a dermatologist for permanent relief.
