Is stiffness of the wrist joint normal after recovering from Colles’ fracture?

Q: I am a 35 years old man who has recovered from Colles’ fracture recently. Now I can close my finger easily but cannot turn my wrist joint. Does this happen after removing the plaster? Is my bone wrongly set? I am applying medicated oil and exercising. Please advise.

A:Wrist stiffness is a common problem encountered after plaster immobilisation for Colles' fracture. Try hot water fomentation, some painkillers and gentle but definite wrist mobilisation exercises. If you cannot do it on your own then see a physiotherapist in your neighbourhood. Its all normal, have patience and work on it.
