Is it normal to develop hypothyroidism after delivery?

Q: I am 32 years old. After my first daughter was born I gained a lot of weight and started having joint pain in both the knees. I was diagnosed to be hypothyroid. It was border line and I was advised to take eltroxin (half tablet). Four months back I gave birth to my second child. I am still taking eltroxin. Now again I have started getting knee pain. What should I do now? Should I start physiotherapy?

A:Thyroid disease occurring after childbirth is called as post-partum thyroidism and is common. This is usually a transient disorder and settles down. In your case whether you need medications or not depends upon the thyroid hormone test results. Pain in knee is not related to thyroid disease so for this contact a orthopaedic surgeon. Send me your thyroid hormone test results for further advice.
