How to treat umbilical granuloma?

Q: Hello Doctor, I am 25 yrs old and married for the past 4 months. I have a discharge from my navel for a year or so now. Its very smelly and yellow in color. I went to a surgeon who said that it was not cleaned properly and gave me betatdine solution. After applying it stopped for some days but then it has again started. Please let me know why this is happening and is it very serious? Also let me know whether I should consult a gynaecologist. Thanks, Priya

A:You probably have an umbilical granuloma. This is a small ulcer-like lesion with a raw area in the umbilicus, discharging fluid. It needs removal by surgery. The surgery usually should extend upto a depth of a few inches, therefore the operation is always done under general anaesthesia. Consult a surgeon. The condition is not in the least serious.
