How to manage persistent knee pain?

Q: For the last 4 months I have pain in my left knee. My doctor diagnosed it as IDK and did arthroscopy and found redness in muscles. Ligaments and Menisci were ok. He advised Ceftum for 2 weeks and thereafter Microcid and Rantac for 1 month. But the problem refuses to go away. The R.A. test and Mantoux test were conducted and were negative. I still feel pinching like feeling in my knees (now it has also appeared in my right knee). What could be the problem?

A:It is difficult to give a diagnosis without having taken a detailed clinical history. Actually, 85% of the diagnostic information comes from a detailed clinical history. Physical examination may help by another 10% while interventions and investigations hardly help more that 5%. Therefore, I strongly recommend that you be seen by a specialist rheumatologist or a specialist in knee diseases. Joint disease clinic at the Indian Spinal Injuries Centre in Vasant Kunj, or the Rheumatologists at the Apollo Hospital, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital or AIIMS may help you in this, if you are in Delhi.
