How to manage anaemia in renal failure?

Q: How should one manage anaemia in end stage renal failure?

A:Anaemia of renal disease is best treated by recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEPO), a hormone produced by the kidney, which stimulates production of red blood cells. Prior to starting treatment, iron status of the patient is determined, and if iron deficient, the patient is put on iron replacement following which EPO is started. The aim of treatment is to increase haemoglobin to 10 g/dl after 4 weeks of therapy and then maintain this level.
