How can my sister, who is suffering from depression, be forced to visit a psychologist?

Q: My 39 years old sister is suffering from depression. She was expecting a good increment at her office and wasn’t given that. Post this, she doesn’t talk to anyone and stays aloof. She is not even willing to visit a psychologist or a doctor. She is in a state of paranoia. How can we force her to visit a doctor?

A:It takes 4-6 weeks for antipsychotics to work and paranoid ideations are controlled well by then. Ask your sister's husband to approach their primary care doctor for help.

It is difficult to force someone into treatment. But if there is a danger to self or others or unable to function then call 911 and get to emergency room and get psychiatric evaluation and thus help her.

I recommend that first find out why she is running away from help. Face the fear.
